National Young Reader's Day

 National Young Reader's Day
November 9, 2010

Happening every year on the second Tuesday of November, National Young Reader's Day highlights the importance of reading to young people. Began in 1989, in conjunction with the Library of Congress and Pizza Hut's "Book-It Program," this special holiday has created an awareness for reader's of all ages about the importance of literacy in our communities.
What can you do to celebrate this holiday?
Read to a child, any child, today. Beyond creating lasting memories, reading aloud to a child has many real world applications. Children learn new words, new auditory sounds, discover new concepts and new ideas, relate pictures to real items in their lives and foster lifelong creative thinking.

Reading a book can take you to a world you never could have imagined.

Brown Bags and Books Reading Group - "Scent of Rain and Lightning"

"Scent of Rain and Lightning" by Nancy Pickard
November 9th at 12pm

From Booklist

*Starred Review* A decades-old mystery is solved and a woman’s haunting questions put to rest in Pickard’s latest thriller. When she was just three years old, Jody Linder lost both parents in one night, when her father, Hugh Jay—eldest son of the wealthiest rancher in the small town of Rose, Kansas—was killed and her mother, Laurie, vanished. Raised by grandparents, Hugh Senior and Annabelle Linder, and with loving support from three uncles, Jody spends years collecting human detritus around the area’s towering Testament Rocks, where authorities once searched for clues to Laurie’s disappearance. Jody’s world is rocked 23 years later when Billy Crosby, the vicious drunk convicted of her father’s murder on circumstantial evidence, is released for a new trial; his return to town brings events to a head.  --Michele Leber

Little Dixie Dispatch: Personal Memoirs

Personal Memoirs

“My appetite for destruction : sex, and drugs, and Guns n' Roses” by Steven Adler (2010) After forty years, twenty-eight ODs, three botched suicides, two heart attacks, a couple of jail stints, and a debilitating stroke, Steven Adler, the most self-destructive rock star ever, is ready to share the shattering untold truth in My Appetite for Destruction.

·    “In a Heartbeat: sharing the power of cheerful giving” by Leigh Anne Tuohy (2010) Those familiar with the film The Blind Side, or Michael Lewis's best-selling book, will likely already know the inspiring story of how the Tuohys took future-NFL star Michael Oher into their home and adopted him. For anyone wondering what more there might be to say about it, the answer is: plenty.

“Staying True” by Jenny Sanford (2010) Sanford—the wronged wife of Mark Sanford, disgraced governor of South Carolina, who famously refused to stand by him when his affair came to light—delivers a crisp and affecting reading of her memoir of her family, career, faith, and the very public implosion of her marriage.

“The Politician” by Andrew Young (2010) Andrew Young volunteered for the Edwards campaign for U.S. Senate in 1998 and soon became the Democratic candidate’s right-hand man and most trusted friend. As Edwards became a national star, Young’s responsibilities grew to include a series of questionable assignments that culminated with being asked to conceal the Senator’s ongoing adultery.
