Happening every year on the second Tuesday of November, National Young Reader's Day highlights the importance of reading to young people. Began in 1989, in conjunction with the Library of Congress and Pizza Hut's "Book-It Program," this special holiday has created an awareness for reader's of all ages about the importance of literacy in our communities. 

What can you do to celebrate this holiday? 

Read to a child, any child, today. Beyond creating lasting memories, reading aloud to a child has many real world applications. Children learn new words, new auditory sounds, discover new concepts and new ideas, relate pictures to real items in their lives and foster lifelong creative thinking. 

Reading a book can take you to a world you never could have imagined.

What's TumbleBooks you ask?

TumbleBooks are a great, FREE way to share the enjoyment of children's books with your child. 

According to TumbleBooks.com, "TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of TumbleBooks – animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.

The TumbleBookLibrary is a collection of licensed titles from children's book publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Chronicle Books, Candlewick Press, Charlesbridge Press, Harcourt, Little Brown, Walker & Company, Lerner Books, HarperCollins Publishers, amongst others.

The TumbleBookLibrary provides enrichment to students who are reading independently with a variety of high interest material. It also provides support to students who require skill building with a variety of exercises that can be matched with other areas of the curriculum. In general, TumbleBooks are a great addition to a reading program that can be worked on independently by each student or by the whole class. It has been exceptionally well received by ESL and Special Education teachers"

But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots.

She is allowed out once a day to the food market, she is not permitted to read, and she is hoping the Commander makes her pregnant, because she is only valued if her ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she was an independent woman, had a job of her own, a husband and child. But all of that is gone now...everything has changed.

Farmer's Almanac Online

Without a doubt, one of the most requested Reference books is the "Old Farmer's Almanac." A great resource for farmer's and burgeoning astronomers. Jokes, riddles, handy tips, weather predictions, planting tips...all since the days of Benjamin Franklin are in the pages of this handy dandy book.

Movin' On Up

Little Dixie Regional Libraries covers two counties and within those two counties, supports 4 libraries. Huntsville, Moberly, Paris, and Madison boast libraries that are part of the LDRL system. As such, they all share books and materials with one another.

Each book is at each library a total of three months. Once those three months are up, they move to the next library until the full rotation is finished. This ensures every library has a chance to have the book and all patrons have a chance to check it out if they desire.

As you can see in the picture above, we have branch shelves in the back of the Moberly building. Here we hold books on their way to the different libraries until they are ready to be delivered.

When we get enough to fill a bag, a library worker will fill the bag with books for easier delivery and travel within the van.

It’s always fun to find out the inner-workings of the library.

Brown Bags and Books Reading Group - "South of Broad"

"South of Broad" by Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy's highly anticipated work earned a decidedly lackluster response from critics, who cited overblown prose, cardboard characters, and implausible plot twists among the novel's key sins. The Dallas Morning News quite candidly noted: "[H]e goes on and on—and on—about the glories of Charleston, S.C., to the point that many readers will be tempted to hurl the book into the nearest vessel of water." But the news wasn't all bad. The Chicago Sun-Times hailed the novel as "a gripping saga," and even disappointed critics, many of them longtime Conroy fans, admitted the 500-plus page novel contained moments of glorious storytelling. Overall, however, readers may find their time better spent rereading Conroy's beloved The Prince of Tides.
